END OF YEAR NEWSLETTER 2020
Looks like we made it…!
As we approach the final weeks of competition in basketball for the year, the Sacred Heart Sports Club is delighted that we’ve been able to have our children playing sport and representing the school in netball, football and basketball despite the challenges presented by the pandemic in this most extraordinary of years. The Sports Club aims to foster teamwork, sportsmanship, positive attitudes and a sense of community and with a very large thank you to your SHM Sports Club coordinators we’ve been able to maintain a high level of participation and achievement in amongst the Covid 19 upheaval which we navigated with all three sporting associations throughout the year.
We are indebted to our small army of volunteer parents who attended training, managed a team or became a 'weekend coach’ - without you our Club cannot offer the level of sporting activities that we are delighted to be able to provide for the children of SHM. The Sports Club develops its training and competition programs alongside Julie Caldwell, Nick Brierly, Andre De Villiers and the entire teaching staff - we’ve greatly valued their enthusiastic support for revised approaches that were put into place by the three Northern Suburbs sporting associations that we participate with and the SHM Sports Club Coordinators.
With netball and football season’s now complete and basketball wrapping up over the next week the Sports Club Coordinators have prepared a season wrap up which is attached - please enjoy….and thank you for supporting the Sacred Heart Sports Club throughout 2020.
And an important reminder! Registration for the first basketball comp in 2021 is due now, Grading is underway and your basketball coordinators are already planning for the new year.
Sincerely,
Chris Chard
Sports Club President
Netball 2020 Season Review
We had 93 players from Years 2-6 register to play netball this year and they were all very grateful to get on the court when the season finally started in Term 3. Our Years 2 and 3 NetSetGo teams played 8 rounds and the junior teams played an exciting 7 rounds plus finals. Well done to all our Sacred Heart girls who played with great spirit, generosity and sportsmanship.
Key Highlights
· 3 teams won their Grand Finals - Congratulations to SH01 (Year 6), SH02 (Year 6) and SH04 (Year 5)
· 2 teams were Runners-Up – Congratulation SH05 (Year 5) and SH06 (Year 4/5)
Our Coach
Sacred Heart Netball Club is very fortunate to employ Jacqui Donohoe as our head coach. She is incredibly committed and passionate about netball and has gotten to know all the players well during her 3 years with the club. Jacqui recorded a series of online training videos this year which are available via the Sports Club website: shmsportsclub.org.au
We were thrilled to see 23 Year 1s participate in our inaugural introduction to netball program under Jacqui’s enthusiastic guidance. All the children had a lot of fun and we look forward to seeing them back on court in 2021.
Our Volunteers
Netball always relies heavily on a large support team of parent volunteers and that was truer than ever this year. As well as the usual coaching, managing, ground duty and umpiring duties our parents also had to manage parent spectator rosters, car-pooling and keep strict attendance records at training and matches under the ever watchful eyes of the NSNA, police, rangers and NSW Health.
A BIG thank you to our parent coaches, managers & umpires who made this year possible and a special thanks to those that helped out with more than one team:
Year 6: Emma & Sophie Rudd, Naomi Higgins, Shell Lamo, Andrea Agar, Rachel Steer
Year 5: Katie O’Brien, Susie Rich, Suzie McLoughlin, Odile Ralton, Kate Goulstone
Year 4: Kate Pairman, Michelle Mutch, Kathryn Pearson, Julia Johnstone, Belinda Johnson
Year 3: Emma O’Lone, Bridget Cargill, Rachel Curran, Eithne Maddern,
Year 2: Liz Beilby, Belinda Johnson, Odile Ralton, Kate Pairman
Year 1: Sara Costas, Suzanne O’Neil
Many thanks to Julie Caldwell for supporting the netball club this year, and in particular helping us organise training as soon as Covid restrictions allowed. Thanks also to SHM staff, especially Sheryl Imlach who supported the netball club in a variety of ways.
Registrations for 2021 will open when school returns in Term 1. Information about playing netball for SHM is available at: https://www.shmsportsclub.org.au/
Football 2020 Season Review
Community sport in 2020 had many challenges and hurdles to overcome. Despite this, SHM Footballers were able to take to the pitches in early June. In a year where outdoor activity, social interaction and teamwork became more important than ever, the club registered a record numbers of players.
Key Highlights
96 players registered from Years K-4
Largest registered group of Kindergarten and Year 1 players since 2017
Competed in 14 rounds of competition games and 12 weeks of training, normally 18 rounds
90% of 2019 coaches returned to coach a 2020 team
44 Kindergarten students participated in the no cost Kindy - Come and Try Soccer Skills session run by XLR8
Talent identification and retention program initiated with our coaching partner XLR8.
For our U6’s Kindergarten children SHM football is usually their first introduction to community competition sport. Our aim is to foster a love of the game and teamwork whilst developing complicated ball skills in a safe and secure environment. It was great to see our 34 Kinder’s flourish and take part in a season alongside 16,000 players in the association (NSFA).
We look forward to seeing all of our footballers again in 2021.
Eastern Region Football Trials
This year the Eastern Region Football Trials (representative pathway) was cancelled due to COVID. We anticipate a return in 2021, with nominations of players sought in conjunction with XLR8 and Mr Andre De’Villiers in early 2021.
XLR8 - Our Coaches
Sacred Heart Football Club is one of 11 clubs within the NSFA region to employ the professional coaching services of XLR8. As a club solely reliant on volunteer parents, SHM FC recognised the need to leverage the coaching experience and skills from the NSFA.
This is the second year we have used XLR8 via a collaborative coaching model, each Thursday afternoon and evening at Middle Head Oval.
XLR8 provide our volunteer parent coaches the technical coaching support and active coaching participation in the delivery and implementation of the FFA National Curriculum.
Many thanks to our two coaches; Jake and Angus who went above and beyond what would usually be required in a season and XLR8 Head Coach, Nick Marr who made himself available to the club throughout the season.
Special thanks to Jon Swain parent volunteer whom again this year took on the role of Club Coaches Co-ordinator (CCC) for the Club.
Volunteers
The extensive and ever evolving FNSW and NSW Health guidelines and requirements thrust onto our parent volunteers and players throughout the season was no easy task to complete, however their willingness to have the children back on the park training, being active and learning new skills in a safe environment shined through. Without our parent volunteers energy, commitment, selflessness and generosity of their time our club would simply not be able to continue.
Thank you to all of our football families who each week across the myriad of North Shore football fields each Saturday abided by the guidelines and ensured all footballers could continue to play.
Our sincere thanks to each of our volunteer parent coaches, referees and managers for making season 2020 happen and a success.

Basketball 2020 Season Review
Sport in 2020 had many challenges and hurdles to overcome, yet despite this the Sacred Heart Basketball Club was as strong as ever.
Key Highlights
220 players registered from Years 1-6
Both Comp 1 and Comp 2 were highly competitive 9 week seasons.
Currently 8 teams are in contention to qualify for the finals.
42 Kindergarten students registered in the Kindy Skills program.
3 of our students has qualified for Mackillop Trials in 2021.
Our Kindy skills program continues to thrive and foster the love of basketball in our youngest students. They are enjoying their introduction to the sport and we look forward to seeing them join the competition in 2021.
We have a number of teams playing in the finals this weekend and we wish them all the very best.
CPS Challenge
This year the Catholic Primary Schools Basketball Challenge (CPS) was cancelled due to Covid and we anticipate a return in 2021. As a basketball community this event was greatly missed.
Our Coaches
Sacred Heart Basketball Club is extremely fortunate to employ Brendan Mathes as our Head Coach. His love of the game is obvious and the impact he has on the players is evident at each weeks’ games. In order to support Brendan in his role we are lucky to now have Macs and Rashad assisting the larger training groups. Macs is the ‘Coordinator for Development’ at Norths (NSBA) and has an amazing passion and drive to develop players of all ages. Rashad is also a Norths Coach and has played basketball in the USA for many years, thankfully for us he now calls Australia home.
The Volunteers
Basketball relies heavily on a large support team of parent volunteers and this year in particular our school community rose to the occasion. Throughout Comp 2 there were so many restrictions to manage and implement in order to ensure a safe environment for all, it seemed at times tedious. The parent spectator rosters, car-pooling and strict attendance records were taxing. Thankfully all our players were excited to compete and spectators were grateful to gain more access to games as the season progressed.
We would like to extend a tremendous thank you to all our parent Coaches and Managers, you made this year possible and a special thanks to those who helped out with more than one team:
Year 6: Chris & Belinda Chard, Andrew Rudd & Natalie Prince, Henry Pilat & Marcia Venegas, Michelle Lamo & Rachel Steer, Dexter Ong & Melissa Fahey.
Year 5: Matt O’Brien & Sam Wood, Brad & Jacqui McCarthy, Chrisia Ballas & Dan Musson, Carlos Sterling & Alicia Fenwick, Zoe Dover.
Year 4: Mike Bailey & Kate Pairman, Kevin Davis & Siobhann Roberts-Thomson, Chris Janes & Damien Sullivan & Ann McCarthy, Belinda Johnson & Julia Johnstone, Fiona Dynon & Sally Farquharson, Ursula Hogben & Lynda Griffin.
Year 3: Dan Chatenay & Marissa Koop, David Woodlock & Claire Tynan-Woodlock, Matt O’Brien & Nick Timmins, Carlos Sterling & Orla Nevilla, Richard Ng & Alicia Fenwick.
Year 2: Sasha Grebe & Kate Pairman, Valeria Boyer & Ryan Beaupre & Elizabeth Beilby, Adam Dixon & Rachel Steer, Naomi Higgins & Michele Keaveny.
Year 1: Michelle Crone & Sara Costas, Toby Barbour & Stephanie Bailey, John Lucchese & Claire Tynan-Woodlock, Simon Nesbitt & Kylie O’Callaghan, Lynda Griffin & Sofe-Louise Stuart,
Many thanks to Julie Caldwell for supporting the Basketball club this year, and in particular for helping us facilitate training as soon as Covid restrictions allowed. Thank you also to SHM staff, especially Sheryl and Ingrid who supported the Basketball club in a variety of ways including many Basketball uniform deliveries.
See you in 2021.
Sincerely,
Sara, Justine, Katie, Susan and Carla
